The Eastern Daily Press Business Awards was launched in 1990, 22 years ago. That year saw the curtain came down on the Thatcher era amid poll tax riots and political recriminations. East and West Germany were reunited and Nelson Mandela walked free after 27 years in prison. The British economy was turning from a Lawson boom towards a Lamont bust. For East Anglian firms it was a year of opportunity.
It was also a year to celebrate their success at the inaugural EDP business Awards. From the outset, the awards have served a two-fold purpose. First, two celebrate the achievements of individual companies. Second, to showcase the region's economic strength and depth.
Lawrence Sear, editorial director of what was then Eastern Counties Newspapers, said at the first awards night at St Andrew's Hall in June 1990: "We hope the awards will inspire others, give encouragement and demonstrate that flair and initiative bring results."Those words ring true today.
