Anthony Marett - Donttravelempty.com
One of the biggest players in UK travel has
signed up to use the award-winning web service
created by entrepreneur Anthony Marett.
Mr Marett’s donttravelempty.com site allows
coach companies to match passengers to empty
vehicles. Last year the transport giant Arriva signed
up to use the site, which now has more than 700
members around the country.
When subscribers to the site flag up a potentially
empty journey - whether returning from or en route
to a delivery - the site automatically searches for a
match, sending out an email alert and Google map
if it succeeds.
Arriva – which operates train services in Wales,
the route that connects Cardiff to Manchester and
Liverpool and cross country services Cornwall to
Aberdeen – uses donttravelempty.com to secure
emergency replacement buses when there are
problems on the rails.
In November, the firm won Innovation of the
Year at a national awards event run by the bus and
coach industry magazine routeONE. The judges
hailed donttravelempty for having “transformed the
economics of coach operation” and solving the
long-standing need for more efficient use of drivers
and vehicles.
Mr Marett developed the database of operators
and journeys with the help of friend and fellow web
entrepreneur Jim Howells. They believe the idea is
not just about business efficiency, but also has a
environmental benefits by reducing the number of
unnecessary journeys or coaches on Britain’s roads
without passengers.
